For the second consecutive day, the Alabama football team worked on fundamentals today on its practice fields. On Thursday, the fifth-ranked Crimson Tide will begin preparing for the seventh-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies. The two teams meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 5 in Atlanta.
"We're ready to kick off the 2009 season," junior wide receiver Earl Alexander said after Wednesday's practice.Senior outside linebacker Eryk Anders also is counting the days to the kickoff in the Georgia Dome. "We're definitely excited about Virginia Tech," he said. "We're tired of hitting each other."
Injury report: Wide receiver Kenny Bell missed another practice with shin splints, but he was the only player wearing a black jersey that signified an injury. Where's Cody? However, senior nose guard Terrence Cody was not at practice. He was sick, according to a media relations staff spokesperson. Pass happy: Alexander grinned when asked if he would like to see the Tide run less two-tight-end sets this season. That would mean getting three wide receivers on the field more often. "Of course," he said. "That'd be nice. But that's up to the coaches." Freshman receivers impressive: Alexander was asked to comment on Kevin Norwood, a freshman receiver who has had two impressive scrimmages. "Kevin's a hard worker," Alexander said. "Just like the rest of them (freshman receivers) are. "They pay attention in meetings and take it to the field."
